The mission of Seniors' Pet Assistance Network (SPAN) is to foster the joy of companionship. We secure joyful, healthy relationships between low-income seniors and their companion animals. SPAN serves Dallas County seniors, age 67 or older, living on a fixed income of $1,200 or less per month. SPAN accomplishes its mission by providing pet food and supplies on an ongoing basis and paying for basic veterinary care, such as annual exams, vaccinations and preventatives.
SPAN delivers pet food to its clients 6 times per year, on the second Saturday of the month during the months of January, March, May, July, September and November. The volunteer opportunity would entail arriving on the distribution day at 8:00 am to sort food and supplies for delivery. Volunteers who would like to make an extended committment could take on a delivery route where the volunteer would deliver food and supplies to the same client or clients on each delivery day to help establish rapport and become a source of support for the senior.
Sometimes clients don't have transportation for their pets and we could also use volunteers who feel comfortable handling animals and taking them to their vet appointments.
All potential volunteers would fill out a volunteer application and are subject to a background check to ensure the safety of our seniors.

The mission of Seniors’ Pet Assistance Network (SPAN) is to serve the needs of Dallas-area seniors who require assistance in caring for their companion-animals. We accomplish this by: providing financial assistance or subsidies, when available and with demonstrated need, for basis pet care needs such as grooming, food and veterinary care creating a network of relationships with Dallas-area animal welfare organizations to assist in providing new homes for pets that can no longer stay with their owners. Future plans of SPAN include providing transportation to and from veterinary clinics and other pet-related errands for homebound seniors.
SPAN serves as a volunteer resource to the elder support programs of Dallas-area senior support organizations, and, in doing so, the organization also strives to improve the quality of life for seniors’ pets. A private, 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization, SPAN is funded solely through donations and operated by volunteers. SPAN maintains no centralized office. Volunteers work out of their own homes or at various event locations throughout the Dallas area.
